Bowel Screening

Early detection increases the chance of early diagnosis and successful treatment. Screening has always been about preventative care and this is important in reducing the incidence of bowel cancer. The Kirklees, Calderdale & Wakefield Screening Centre has recently extended the age for screening and are now inviting patients to complete a FIT kit from the age of 50. We hope our patients will take advantage of this programme.

Armed Forces Veteran Friendly Accredited GP Practice
We are pleased to advise that Todmorden Group Practice has recently become an ‘Armed Forces Veteran Friendly Accredited GP Practice.
This means that, as part of the health commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant, we have a dedicated clinician who has a specialist knowledge of military related health conditions and veteran specific health services. This is important in helping ex-forces to get the best care and treatment. If you are ex-forces, please let your GP know to help ensure you are getting the best possible care.

Fear of Flying
People sometimes call the Practice requesting a prescription for diazepam for fear of flying or to assist with sleep during flights. Diazepam is a sedative, which makes you more relaxed and sleepy. There are a number of reasons where prescribing the drug is not recommended. Our doctors follow the British National Formulary for prescribing. Diazepam is ‘contraindicated’ (not permitted) for treating phobias e.g. fear of flying. The Formulary also states that benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam) to treat short term anxiety are inappropriate. Your doctor will be taking a significant risk by prescribing against these guidelines. Although emergencies during a flight occur rarely, there are concerns that passengers taking diazepam have reduced awareness and reaction times which might pose a risk for themselves and others due to not being able to react in an appropriate manner in the event of an on board emergency.
Services for LGBT+ Patients
Our Equality and Diversity policy is reviewed and updated on a yearly basis. All Practice staff are required to complete online e-learning on equality and diversity as part of their mandatory training. Attached are some helpful links for screening for transgender patients and some useful signposting for support and guidance.
